Music Posters

Hip hop

This poster for Jay-Z UK tour does not have an image of the him, the artist , they have used from art the album cover. this help people recognize the artist and helps to promote the album. This will make people want to go to the concert. This poster is very different hip-hop genre poster because it show the artist so it doesn’t follow the typical conventions of the genre as well. Also the typography is very typical of the style of the poster, all of the typography and information about the concert is the same.

Pop

This poster is very typical of the pop music genre. The colours on the poster really reflect the genre, they are normally bright bold, "in your face" colours. The typography of the poster is very easy and clear to read, it is in pastel colours, also some of the typography is in the in the style of lipstick being written on a mirror, this shows us that the genre is pop. The main image is of Nicki Minaj, this is good for promoting the concert because, all of the fans will know and recognise her face, making more people wanting to come to the concert.

Rock

This poster has a dark theme/ colour scheme, this follows the conventions of the rock genre. They have used the cover art from their latest album to promote their concert. The gorillas tongue and lips, are the bands logo, everybody knows this and as soon as they see this they will instantly know  it as a rolling stones concert. The background is of the recognizable skyline of London, this tells everyone where the concert will be taking place. The typography is very typical of the rock genre, it looks like it has been done quickly with a paint bush, this follows the conventions of rock being quite wild or laid back.

Alterative

This posters style is very similar to the rock genre, with is colour scheme it is very dark. But you can definitely tell this isn't rock because of the typography looks very similar to indie or pop. It uses the boldness of the white on black to make there poster eye catching. The key information is very clear as it shows the date and venue in a very visible place. The poster is also the cover art they used for their album, this makes the audience or fans recognise which album most of the songs will be from and who is playing.

Shot Analysis

Here are some shots that have been analysed, from the Duke Dumont feat. A*M*E - Need U (100%) music video:

This shot is at the establishing shot, it shows where the video begins and what we can see that the man on the hospital bed may have a problem. It is a mid-shot, it also shows the name the artist in clear view, this really promotes the artist and catches the audiences attention straight away.

This shot shows the audience that the man has a tape player or radio in his stomach, this begins to tell the story about his life. it is a close up so you can under stand what it is. Also the music gets louder when the close up zooms in, to suggest that the music for the video is coming from his stomach.

This long shot suggests he cant escape his "curse" of people always dancing around him, when he wants to carry on with a normal life by catching the bus. The man dances in normal clothes and he also dances to the beat. The red-ish colour of the bus stop and the traffic cones connotes the mans anger and rage as people wont leave him alone.

This close up implies that they will be conducting surgery to remove the tape player or radio. It shows the audience that the music video is coming to the end and once it is removed it will finish. The blue could suggest the mans sickness or sadness.

This over the shoulder, close up shot denotes the tape player in the surgical waste bowl, after surgery. Also the man suddenly presses the stop button because he has had enough of the song, it being in the waste bowl connotes that he hates it. But through out the music video everyone else enjoys it, making the audience like it. The narrative is circular as it starts in the hospital and ends there. The music video also is full of disjuncture as the lyrics don't link to the song.

Cutting to the beat

All of the shots are pretty similar; they all have the main subject (man with radio in stomach) in every shot

Amplification Disjucture and Illustrative

Radiohead - No Surprises

The music video for no surprises by Radiohead is full of disjuncture. The music soundtrack doesn’t like to the music video at all. In the music video we see the main singer of Radiohead singing, in side, of what seems to be a fish tank or glass bowl, it slowly fill up and doesn’t have any meaning to the song. But if we look really closely, we could see that water filling up the bowl could suggest that he is sad and something has happened in this life, making him want to commit suicide, by drowning. The lyrics sound very sad and suicidal, he just wants a quiet life”I’ll take the quiet life”, meaning he wants to die.

LunchMoney Lewis - Bills

The music video for Bills, the music of the song match what is happening in the video. For example he says "I got bills, I gotta pay" this links to all of the bills that have filled up his car, this shows that this music video uses amplification. It could also be seen as a circular narrative as he doesn't pay any of this bills off and he is still at home in his dressing gown. This song makes a very tedious job into something more fun with this song, it also shows that, its not just a few people struggling to pay bills.

Owl City-Fireflies

Commonly used. Images illustrate the illustration lyrics Illustration is the simplest and easiest concept to base a music video around as it is just a literal meaning to the song’s lyrics in visual form. Owl City have used illustrative ideas in their videos before, for example in Fireflies’ when the artist is singing and as he says ‘fireflies’ the word fireflies comes up on the screen to a little toy gadget.

What is a music promo?

A music video or promo is used to get the artists song noticed by a its target audience. The song should normally work with the video or clip. There are many types of music promos and the best ones are the ones that really catch the viewers attention and are really remember able. Two of the most well know videos are Queens Bohemian Rhapsody and BeyoncĂ©'s single ladies.

Music videos have to memorable, this will make them a lot easier for people to remember the song itself and more people will be likely to purchase it as it has an official video and they know its from  the artist they know and love. The more exciting and funny video is the more likely that people will actually enjoy it, to make more people make it funny it normally best to use disjuncture.

Also  TV channels such as 4music, MTV and viva used to be the best for getting than artists track noticed and they still do, but know I think that YouTube does a much better job of promoting songs as its easy to access and it is global. The internet has play a large role in music promotion as the majority of the worlds population have some way or another of accessing the internet. Artist don't promote their songs they also promote themselves to get noticed, they normally do this on social networking sites such as Facebook and twitter. This also enables people to share the artists music easily with their friends. Also smart phones and apps also are useful now to promote the artist and their music as apps such as VEVO are used to promote music videos and also smartphones have the ability to be able to access pretty much anything on the internet making it easy to find artists and their music while on the move and away from home.
